情感的交流与沟通,通常需要互动及语言作为媒介。如果没有互动机会,或语言上无法深入交流与沟通,感情也就难以深入建立与巩固。一个家庭里亲人们之间的亲情建立也是这样的道理,无法互动,语言上无法深入交流,亲情也只能是如流水中的浮萍,天空中飘动的云朵。而《趣屏!》是一个家庭视频通话及语言学习互动平台,让相隔异地及不同语言背景的家人,以简化并精选过的语言教学模式,一边提升使用者的语言能力,一边增强双方的沟通及亲情。这个互动模式不但能够让双方变得更会了解对方的输出的语言内容,也会因互动次数的跃进使双方关系变得更加紧密,从而优化亲子关系。《趣屏!》对于语言学习的鼓励及跨国家庭关系的修补作出了莫大的贡献,而这些成就是其他现有平台做不到的。此平台不仅让孙辈们慢慢学会了自己的民族母语,多掌握国际上的一种主要语言,而且更主要的是与爷爷奶奶、外公外婆之间加强了共同语言的交流,通过提升日常语言互动,使双方能够互相理解,在不知不觉中增加了感情的维系,密切了祖孙辈之间的亲情。语言就是「亲」的桥梁。

 
Design description

The exchange and communication of emotions often rely on interactions and language as a medium. Without sufficient opportunities for interaction or deep communication through language, establishing and strengthening emotions can be challenging. This principle also applies to the establishment of familial bonds among family members. Without the ability to interact or communicate in a common language, these bonds may feel as fleeting as floating duckweed in flowing water or clouds drifting in the sky.


Herein lies the significance of Chirp! - a platform designed for family video calls and language learning, aimed at simplifying teaching methods and enhancing language abilities while fostering stronger familial relationships by increasing interaction frequency, and promoting better communication understanding.

 


 

 

Challenge

 

In the culture of the Chinese nation, "kin" carries deep emotions and represents love, family affection, gratitude, and harmony. However, with the development of commercial society, "family" seems to have gradually lost its original depth and turned into a commodity and symbol. The design team is concerned that in modern society, although the development of technology and economy has improved the quality of life, people still long to return to the origin of family ties. Faced with this challenge, the design team thought: In service experience and innovation, how to integrate "family" into every aspect and become a bridge of trust between service providers and users?


Emotion, communication, and interaction are intertwined and constitute the key elements in establishing family ties. The establishment of family affection usually requires interaction and language as a medium. If there is a lack of interaction opportunities or in-depth communication in language, it will be difficult to establish and consolidate family affection in depth.

 

 

Mr. Liang Yuanfa's short story "The Air Bridge of Family Love" based on his own personal experience as a Chinese living in France aroused emotional resonance among the design team. For family members scattered in different places, video calls have become the main way to connect, but language differences make normal conversations a challenge. Based on this, the design team hopes to create design solutions that can transcend language barriers and find innovative ways to redefine and connect the meaning of "family".

 

  

 

Process

 

 

With the evolution of the times, the phenomenon of transnational families has gradually increased, making the language barrier between grandparents and grandchildren an increasingly obvious problem. The design team took the Chinese society as a starting point and chose "transnational families" as the target audience. This group covers people of different ages and life backgrounds, each of whom plays a unique role. Such a relationship network creates a series of communication problems when faced with language barriers.


Through in-depth interviews and surveys, the design team gained a detailed understanding of communication issues between different generations. The first generation, the grandparents, were born and settled in mainland China. They are around 50 to 70 years old. They cannot understand the language of their grandchildren, which creates barriers to communication.

 

 

The second generation, that is, the parents, were born in mainland China, immigrated and settled overseas. They are around 30 to 50 years old. Their children are unwilling to speak Chinese, resulting in communication difficulties.

 

 

The third generation, that is, the grandchildren, who were born and settled overseas and are around four to twelve years old, feel that communication with their grandparents lacks interest.

 

 

The survey results identified the core of the problem - "language barrier", which is also layered among different generations of transnational families. At this point, the design team raised the key question of design: How can we overcome the high wall of "language barrier" and improve the level of "friendship"?

 

 

Outcomes

 

 

The design team built the "Chirp! Fun Screen" family video call and language learning interactive platform, hoping to bridge the gap in family relationships caused by language differences and provide users with a space for common growth.


"Chirp!" is an onomatopoeia for the sound of birds, symbolizing the importance of communication. The platform uses bird sounds as a metaphor to focus on communication and promote user relationships through the functions and assistance provided by the platform. The bird's ability to fly functions like a platform, allowing users to communicate in real time across the ocean. The platform also supports the elderly like a bird's nest, nurturing and inheriting unique language and culture. The design team hopes to allow family members to fly like birds, transcend time and space, and build a nest of family love together.


Platform elements include video calls and mutual learning platforms. Based on basic communication functions, video calls are designed to focus on language learning and increasing long-distance interactions, so as to enhance the closeness of long-distance relationships. The design of the mutual learning platform provides users with opportunities to teach and learn from each other. No matter their age or where they are, everyone can find their role here and become each other's partners.


In terms of teaching methods, Quping uses the "General Curriculum Syllabus for International Chinese Teaching" as a guide to construct a structural relationship diagram of Quping's language teaching objectives to help users comprehensively improve their comprehensive language abilities. Emphasis is placed on developing listening and speaking skills through learning to achieve more comfortable daily language applications.

 

 

In the end, the design team proposed five major functions: negotiating class hours, traffic teaching materials, using teaching materials during calls, AI recognition and teaching material generation, and reviewing class teaching records, building a platform for users to realize language learning and family connections.


Feature 1, Negotiate class time: Allow users to communicate and make appointments on the platform.

 

 

Feature 2, Browse teaching materials: Provide users with appropriate teaching materials on the platform to assist in arranging and planning courses.

 

 

Feature 3, use teaching materials during calls: During calls, users can use the teaching materials provided by the platform to hold interactive language learning sessions.

 

 

Feature 4, AI recognition and teaching material generation: Users can provide private materials (such as photos) during the call, and use the platform's artificial intelligence to analyze and identify vocabulary of various difficulty levels in the material, and generate appropriate teaching materials for use.

 

 

Feature 5, Review class teaching records: After the call, the conversation records will be automatically arranged and analyzed, and the topics and learning points of the class will be sorted out so that users can review them and be reminded of the parts that have been taught.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Evaluate

 

The design team went deep into the user psychology and comprehensively presented the experience of grandparents, parents, and grandchildren using the platform in the form of a user journey map, describing in detail their expectations before communication, to the communication and interaction in the middle, and to the emotional maintenance in the later period. various stages, so as to more comprehensively understand the user's emotions, needs and experiences throughout the entire use process. These vivid user journey maps not only provide the design team with a deep understanding of users, but also lay a solid foundation for the continuous optimization and innovation of the platform.

 

 

 

Based on the in-depth and detailed user journey map, the design team conducted expert interviews to inject more professional perspectives and in-depth insights into different stages of design. Expert interviews are an important step in project advancement, aiming to obtain feedback and suggestions from professional fields to ensure that the design of the platform reaches the best level in both theory and practice.

 

 

"How can we measure whether our solution can really bring people closer to each other than other services?" Regarding this issue, the design team put forward their clear and powerful value proposition:


The transmission of emotion. When we encounter the word "kin", we refer to our innate family relationship. Maintaining loving relationships provides us with the opportunity to develop closer connections with our family members, allowing us to express loving emotions and feelings more naturally. Therefore, the successful way of expressing emotions and feelings to family members is considered a key factor in strengthening family bonds.

 

The importance of language. As evidence of the expression of emotions or feelings between family members, communication plays an important role here, enabling both parties to communicate successfully with each other's ideas and perspectives with full understanding of the context provided by each party. Therefore, language becomes an important medium for successful communication and mutual understanding between both parties, further promoting a closer relationship. Without a common language to communicate, it will be difficult to understand each other and relationships will remain bland and superficial.


Appropriate interaction. Interaction plays an important role in establishing a harmonious and interesting connection between two parties. Interaction refers to how two parties engage with each other using a common language, such as face-to-face teaching and learning. Regardless of the form of the interaction, as long as both parties put effort into the interaction, cherished memories will be created and the relationship will be strengthened.


Additionally, the design team looked at in-depth comparisons and analyzes with competing products to more fully evaluate their solutions.

 

 

 

Impact

 

Taken together, the design of Fun Screen builds a unique bridge between language learning and family relationships on multiple levels. By providing children with the opportunity to learn the language of their home country, it not only develops their bilingual skills but also brings them closer to major international languages. More importantly, Quping makes communication between grandparents, parents and grandchildren deeper and more interesting by providing carefully designed interactive learning experiences.


The success of this design lies not only in solving the practical problem of language learning, but also in achieving the true repair of transnational family relationships through technological innovation. By improving the quality of daily interactions, Quscreen makes the relationships between grandparents and grandchildren richer and closer. Language is no longer a simple communication tool, but has become a bond connecting family emotions.

 

Looking ahead, the design team's vision is even more ambitious. They plan to expand the target audience to young adults and build a closer bond between their ancestors and this generation of young people. The design team worked hard to find a balance between technology and family interaction by introducing innovative interactive elements such as language mini-game filters. This vision also expresses the continuous pursuit of future interactive experiences and paints a picture full of vitality and possibility for Quping’s future development. Through this series of innovations, the design team looks forward to continuing to lead the trend in the fields of language learning and family communication and creating a richer and more in-depth user experience.
